KVM Switches in IT Management

KVM is an acronym for Keyboard-Video-Mouse. These three components are a sine qua non for a complete computer system. The keyboard is used to type information into the computer, the video screen or monitor displays the information typed into the computer; while the mouse controls the cursor on the video display unit screen. For a single computer, this is all you need to complete your system. However, where you have several to many computer units being operated by only one person regularly, but not at the same time; you have two possible options. The first option is to have a dedicated keyboard, monitor, and mouse for each computer unit. This means that you will have to replicate these components for each of your computer systems. This is quite economically wasteful and unnecessary.

KVM Switches

The second and more economical option is to have all your computer systems connected to each other, in such a way as to save you the cost of having more than one set of keyboard, monitor, and mouse. Here then is the beauty of KVM switches.
The place of KVM switches in Information Technology (IT) is a unique one. KVM switching allows you to use a single set of keyboard, video monitor and mouse, to control many computers. Whether you have a complex IT setup as in an industrial
server room, or you have a workstation of desktop computers; by connecting them to a KVM switch, you save on the extra cost of having dedicated keyboard, monitor, and mouse for each of your computer units.

Applications of KVM Switches

KVM switches are useful in a number of applications. In industrial applications, KVM switches are used in server rooms. A server room can contain anywhere from a few, to hundreds of servers. By connecting servers to a KVM switch, all the servers can then be controlled from a central location for ease of monitoring their operating performance. This will also make life a lot easier for network managers. They will not have to move continuously from one computer unit to another, monitoring each and every one individually.

Other areas where you can use KVM switches, include business networks where you have a number of desktop computers being accessed regularly, but not at the same time. This kind of setup can include helpdesks of commercial organizations, factory assembly lines, software developers. In fact KVM switches find ready application anywhere you have multi-computer desktops in a network.

Benefits of Using KVM Switches

There are a number of benefits of using KVM switches in your network. You cut down on your budget for computer peripherals. Instead of budgeting for the number of keyboards, monitors and mice required for all the computers in your network; you only need to buy one of each of these peripherals for the whole network. This could amount to real big savings for your organization.  In addition, you save on cost of energy which the additional peripherals would have consumed. Furthermore, you can make more efficient use of available workspace in your organization by eliminating unnecessary hardware from your network.
